Curtain design ideas for Dhaka apartments

Modern curtain design in a Dhaka apartment starts with the track and the heading. Here's how we plan both, room by room.

Modern curtain design in a Dhaka apartment comes down to where the track sits and how the cloth folds. Mount the track close to the ceiling and let the curtain fall just clear of the floor. A ripple fold heading gives the even wave most modern rooms want, and a quiet colour with some texture does the rest.

Most Dhaka flats are handed over with bare windows and a plain ceiling. Whether you plan for it or not, the curtain ends up doing a lot of the design work in the room.

At the studio we see the same few decisions make or break a room. They're less about the fabric than most people expect.

Hang the track high and let the cloth fall to the floor

The quickest way to make a room look taller is to move the track up. A curtain that starts just under the ceiling and drops in one line pulls the eye upward. Hung at the top of the window frame, the same curtain cuts the wall in half.

In a living room, finish the hem just clear of the floor so it doesn't gather dust. A formal drawing room can take a slight break where the cloth touches the floor. Pooled fabric looks deliberate in a hotel lobby. In a Dhaka flat it mostly collects grit.

The heading decides whether a curtain looks modern

Two curtains in the same fabric can read as dated or current on the heading alone. Ripple fold, also called S-fold, runs on a track and makes one continuous wave from end to end. Pinch pleat gathers the cloth into stitched folds at the top and holds sharper, more tailored lines.

Every curtain we make is weighted at the bottom corners. Ceiling fans run for most of the year here, and the weights are what keep a ripple fold hanging as an even wave instead of drifting toward the fan.

Plan where the curtain stacks when it's open

An open curtain still takes up space. The folded cloth, called the stack, gathers at the side of the window, and if the track stops at the frame it sits over the glass. You lose light every single day.

Run the track past the frame on both sides so the stack rests on the wall. In a narrow room with a wardrobe or an AC unit beside the window, check there's wall to spare before you pick a full, heavy fabric.

Two layers on one window

Most modern Dhaka flats need two moods from the same window. A sheer softens the glare by day and keeps the room bright. At night a blackout or lined layer comes across, because lamps inside turn the glass into a lit screen for the building opposite.

Two layers need two tracks, planned together so each one runs freely. In a finished Bashundhara home with a double-height living floor, we hung sheer and blackout together and the tall glass still reads as one clean surface. Our guide to blackout vs sheer curtains for Dhaka apartments covers how to choose each layer.

Quiet colour, real texture

Warm whites and soft greys are the safest place to start in a Dhaka flat. Afternoon light here is harsh, and a strong colour can look very different at four o'clock than it did under shop lighting. A neutral holds steady.

Texture is where a plain curtain gets its character. A linen-look weave or a slubbed yarn catches side light and keeps a neutral room from looking flat, which is the job our textured curtains are made for. For a richer finish, the solid range includes velvets.

Dark solid colours fade in direct sun over time. When one faces a sunny window, we fit a UV-protective lining behind it.

Our Gulshan 2 flagship holds 1,000+ imported swatches. Take a few to the window before you decide.

Small windows often look better with a blind

Not every window wants a full-length curtain. A small study window, or one boxed in by a wardrobe, can look cramped under heavy drapery. A roller blind sits within the frame and almost disappears when it's up.

Roller screens come in different openness levels. A 1% screen gives the most heat rejection and privacy, and a 5% screen keeps a clear view with soft daylight. 3% sits between the two.

If you'd rather keep the softness of fabric, a Roman blind folds up into neat horizontal pleats. It works well in a cloth that relates to the curtains elsewhere in the flat, so a small window still feels part of the room.

Motorised tracks for glass you can't reach

On double-height glass or a long run of windows, drawing a curtain by hand gets old quickly. A motorised track opens the whole run evenly at the press of a switch.

Motorised systems start from about ৳20,000 per window. For a bedroom window you can reach easily, a good manual track is enough.

How Hello Sun does it

Design starts with the room. Our consultants ask how you use the space and where the light falls at different hours before anyone talks about fabric.

Then you choose cloth and heading together, with a curtain hanging on a real track in front of you. Our team measures every window on site and tailors each curtain to that measure. The same team installs it, motorised systems included.

Working with an interior designer or architect? We plan the track and heading with them, so the curtain belongs to the room from the start. If you'd like to see what our measure checks, read how to measure windows for curtains in Dhaka.

A ripple fold curtain on a ceiling track, in a quiet neutral with some texture, suits most modern flats. Add a sheer in front if the room takes strong sun.
